Lawrence students Serena Forb, Rachel Knight, Naomi Kurata and Luke Rhodes, from the piano studios of Judy Chadwick, Jean Drumm and Carole Ross, placed first at the Kansas Music Teachers District Audition and also played at the state audition on Nov. 8. at Murphy Hall on the campus of Kansas University.

Douglas County Sheriff Ken McGovern was honored at the 32nd Annual Governor’s Conference for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. Sheriff McGovern was recognized by TFI Family Services for his outstanding law enforcement services for Kansas Children and Families. The Governor’s Conference was Oct. 29-30 in Wichita at the Airport Hilton.

Sheriff McGovern and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office have worked for more than 10 years with TFI Family Services’ Douglas County Supervised Visitation and Exchange Center. He has also been actively supportive of the community’s drive to develop a Child Advocacy Center.

Ruaa Hassaballa, Lawrence Free State High School junior, was named one of three winners, earning cash prizes for their writing skills, at the 23rd annual Black Leadership Symposium Oct. 23 at Kansas University.

More than 400 black students from Topeka, Kansas City, Wichita and other regional high schools and junior high schools participated in the KU-sponsored symposium that offered workshops and dialogues promoting leadership. This year’s theme was “Quest for Your Best and Take the Lead.”

The reading competition required students to read selected books and write reviews on such authors as Frederick Douglass, Langston Hughes, Harriet Jacobs, James Baldwin, Alice Walker, Ernest J. Gaines, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Margaret Walker and Richard Wright.

Kim and Tom Taylor, Baldwin City, announce the birth of their son, Samuel Leroy Taylor, on Oct. 28, 2008, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center.

Samuel has two sisters, Allison, 6, and Emily, 4.

His maternal grandparents are Janice and Terry McKenzie, Eudora.

His paternal grandparents are Sharon and Andy Baux, Lawrence.

His great-grandparent is Charlotte Stack, Kansas City, Kan.

Clyde Vincent Thierry celebrated his 100th birthday on Oct. 25. at the Village Community Church in Kansas City, Kan. The program included commentary from close friends and family members, a talent show, musical solos, a praise dance, a dramatic reading, a gospel duet and a slide presentation. He also received a greeting from President George W. Bush and a medal from Kansas State Sen. David Haley displaying the Great Seal of Kansas, the fourth ever to be given.

Thierry also celebrated his actual birthday, on Oct. 22, with a reception hosted by The Meals on Wheels organization of Lawrence at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
