Old Home Town – 25 years ago

A 21-year-old Lawrence woman shoved out of the path of a car here said she was saved by an “act of pure heroism.” The hero was 27-year-old William R. Hutton, Overland Park, who himself was struck by the oncoming car and was listed in critical condition. Lisa Pulliam was the woman saved in the incident at 23rd and Iowa.

Economic conditions had caused 60 recent layoffs at the Cooperative Farm Chemicals Assn. fertilizer plant here. Workers said they were confused about the development since the plant seemed to be doing well. Officials said “don’t push the panic button, we have hopes of bouncing back.”
