Planned site upgrades postponed

November 12, 2008, 12:00 a.m. Updated November 12, 2008, 2:32 p.m.

Update: The previously planned service outage for Wednesday night and Thursday morning has been postponed to Monday, Nov. 17. We regret any inconvenience this change may have caused.

Some of your favorite features about, and will be unavailable Wednesday night as we complete a major upgrade to the back end of our Web site.

Between 8 p.m. Wednesday and about 5 a.m. Thursday, comments, polls and other interactive features of our Web sites will be unavailable. You still will be able to read stories, watch videos and look at pictures, but you'll have to save your comments until we've completed our upgrades.

We're doing this so all of our sites can communicate with one another better and, in the future, to enable us to roll out new features you want to all three sites at the same time.

The upgrades also will provide us the tools to launch rebuilt versions of and in the near future. When those new sites launch, you'll be able to take advantage of new fan blogs, social networking tools and other organizational changes that make it easier to find much of our multimedia content.

If you find any bugs in the new sites after Thursday morning, please let us know.

Ah, it'll be nice not to have to put up with Marion's pointless rants for an entire night.LJWorld should do this more often.

Some of your favorite features about, and will be unavailable Wednesday night as we complete a major upgrade to theback end of our Web site.sounds good, I'm definitely a backend man. seriously, what is meant by "backend?" besides sounding like a polite euphamism for a woman's assets, what's it referring to?and, Jonathan, I'll just write down my comments on paper, slip them under the door and expect your galley slaves to enter them online.

So basically you are trying to make all the websites integrate better? Sounds good to me.Will this include universal login for all the website?

bearded_gnome asks:"seriously, what is meant by "backend?" besides sounding like a polite euphamism for a woman's assets, what's it referring to?"And the answer:Basically, web design and development breaks down into two major areas of specialization: "front end" folks who handle things like page layout and design, usability, information architecture, etc., and "back end" folks who handle the software that stores the content, assembles the pages you see from database records and templates, and implements the interactive features like comments, polls, chats and so on.Usually you won't see or hear from those of us on the "back end" unless something goes wrong or there's a big software upgrade happening; we just occasionally stay up late to push out a change, and by the time everybody wakes up the next morning it's done. Monday night's going to be a pretty major upgrade for us, though, so as a precaution various interactive "back end" features are going to be disabled for a bit while we get everything switched over and running smoothly again.--James Bennett, web developer,

NLowrider asks:"Will this include universal login for all the website?"And the answer:Actually, your account here is good on this site, and, and has been for as far back as I can remember. Due to the way your web browser stores and reports back information to sites you visit, however, we can't tell if you're logged in to one site and visiting another. So you need to log in to each site before, say, posting a comment, but it's the same username and password for each of them.Compare, for example:* three of those are you, and are pulling data from the same single account. We only show content relevant to a particular site, though, so here your profile only shows comments you've posted on, while at it only shows comments you've posted on Bennett, web developer,

thanks for the word James Benett. some of your comments should have been in the original posting, more info is always gooder. and I am curious how the commenting and comment reading might change. well, I see the upgrade got postponed. somebody didn't bring sumpin'. well, good luck James, sounds like you've got some work ahead of you. we like to complain when we find a problem or something doesn't communicate right on the paper, but I'm telling you thanks for upgrading and for answering questions here!
