Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 5, 1908: “Dr. James Naismith at the university has started some freshman swimming classes. He has about 400 enrolled and three times a week they splash around in the Robinson tank. : There are nearly 100 Kansas counties represented by the students at KU and clubs are being formed for each county to hold meetings. : Republican victory margins here and across the country continue to grow as final vote totals become available. William Howard Taft won Kansas by more than 40,000 and governor-elect W.R. Stubbs had a 36,000-vote margin at last count. There were many Republican landslides. : William Banning was elected sheriff of Douglas County over Sel Ray, the Republican candidate, by some 300 votes. It was a close race not decided until long after the polls closed. Names such as C.A. Smart, W.R. Green, Tom Harley, Henry Asher, Dr. Carl Phillips, Lloyd Duffee and Albert Walters dominated the local results.”
