Obama wins handily in earliest vote

November 4, 2008

— Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where the tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.

Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.

The first Dixville Notch voter, following tradition established in 1948, was picked ahead of the midnight voting and the rest of the town's 21 registered voters followed suit in today's first minutes.

Town Clerk Rick Erwin said the northern New Hampshire town is proud of its tradition, but added that the most important thing is that the turnout represents a 100 percent vote.

"what is obviously acceptable in society now that Jeremiah's buddy has been elected."Yes, that's what I was talking about. The rest I'll let slide, lest I go back on my word to myself to quit this place for a day or so.

Ever read a newspaper, Tom? It's really bad news anywhere you want to look, and guess who's been in charge for the last 8 years? I'm not expecting miracles from the Democrats, but continuing to let Republicans bang our heads against the wall is most certainly not an option.

Holy frack, Tom, you are going to burnout a few synapses if you are this worked up this early. The media has reported this as far back as I can remember (Regan) and it has nothing to do with being "crooked".In one of McCain's little victories today, he didn't wake up dead, so he has that going for him.

Rightman, though they sound intelligent, those 10 cannots are both less profound and less true than you believe. They're not even true, some of them. So if taxes are raised on the 10 percent who own the 90 percent, you're insinuating that they'll be "destroyed"? Not much on hyperbole, huh. Your world view is dangerously stark, very black and white. Rather sad. The world has multitudinous colors, Baby! Open your eyes! GOBAMA!!!!

No matter who you are for this is really one of those ..... who cares election results.Getting pretty desperate for election information when this stuff is more than a page 7 story.

Ummm ... yeah. This village in New Hampshire is known for its midnight voting. It's the first election results pretty much every presidential election. And actually, they could have voted McCain in Dixville Notch because this is the first time a win has gone to the Democratic presidential candidate since 1968. So ... that means Bush won there ... twice. And Bob Dole won there. And the first Bush won twice ... and Republicans won so on and so forth all the way back to when Nixon lost in Dixville Notch to Hubert Humphrey. Of course, Nixon won the country.Anyhow as it has been said ... this election story is a tradition. It's like how newspapers write about weather when a storm hits or when its been exceptionally dry. But ... I'm happy to see it.

Obama......for those that don't like him...

To take a page out of Jeremiah Wright's book, and remember, this is acceptable because Obama had him on a committee of his. hu hummm "God DAMn Obama. God DAMn his illegal fund raising. God DAMn his ties with people who have bombed US buildings. God DAMn his friendship with Khalidi. God DAMn the Black Panthers whom he is friends with and tried to intimidate Republican voters in Philly. God DAMn ACORN. God DAMn CNN and MSNBC. God DAMn Obama's illegal fund raising."To those who are going to request that this be taken down, remember, this must be OK to say these things because Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright said "God DAMn America!"So when corporations fail because they are too heavily taxed or when electricity is too expensive for you all to heat your home because Obama has bankrupt the coal industry and when terrorism has once again invaded this country and when all of the Eastern Indians and Mexican's have taken all of the jobs and resources, don't blame me, I voted for McCain. This train wreck is going to be fun to watch.

I am ecstatic about the possibility of Obama winning. It will dispell some of the myths about black people if nothing else. It will let little black children have something to be proud of. When they look at the president (hopefully) they can see themselves in him instead of the stereotypical images they have always been told of. Even more important, little white children can see an image of black americans that is positive. No matter what some of their racist parents tell them, they can see for themselves. The children are truly the future. I pray for whomever is elected tonight and hope this is a wake up call for our country that transends race. Maybe this will truly get us talking and living together.

Rachael, the 29 votes you refer to were in a different small village, Hart's Location. The 21 votes were in Dixville Notch, 16 for Obama and 5 for McCain. Read the story.

Jonas, just paraphrasing what is obviously acceptable in society now that Jeremiah's buddy has been elected. I never again want to hear about the republicans being the wealthy party or whites being the wealthy and priveleged race. $600 million? Are you freaking kidding me? He BOUGHT this election.. the very man who sought reform with campaign finance BOUGHT this election in a manner that he had portrayed as being previously deplorable.

"To those who are going to request that this be taken down, remember, this must be OK to say these things because Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright said "God DAMn America!""Do you realize how absurd that rationale makes you sound?Oh wait, of course you don't.

offtotheright - you are correct in those statements. eventually some of these people will understand the rich and corporations will survivecorporations DO NOT PAY TAXES .... they collect them .... take a look at your phone bill as an example .... other corporations will just increase what they charge for a service or product .... WE PAY THE HIGHER COSTS SO THEY CAN PAY THE INCREASES IN TAXES .... and in many cases corporations will hire less people or layoff people to cut costs ..... they will survive will you .... or are we headed for the Jimmy Carter high unemployment yearsAlways keep in mind ..... jobs don't come from poor people

Love this. So sorry, Tom. You had eight years. Not sure we could afford even one more. How's that 401-K looking for ya? Not to mention the scores of caskets coming back from Iraq. Ready for a change? You betcha! I feel hopeful tonight. Tom will not take that away from me.What an historic night.

"17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul." "the rest of the town's 21 registered voters"Somebody do the math. I'm not good at it and it doesn't seem it adds up at all. 29 votes, 22 registered voters?
