A driver's license check lane planned for this past weekend will be rescheduled, a Douglas County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said Monday.

The agency canceled the early Sunday morning check lane east of Lawrence on North 1500 Road because of foggy conditions, Lt. Kari Wempe said.

"We felt it was not in the best interest of our officers or drivers, due to the unsafe conditions posed by the weather," she said.

Sheriff's deputies had planned to set up the check lane between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. Sunday, on the extension of 15th Street that runs between Lawrence and Eudora.

Ummmm.......... yeah. Police stopping cars to demand identification papers? I mean, there are no possible associations anyone could have with that, right? No bad memories from other countries? Between Obama's "civilian defense corps" and our regular police feeling like the magic of putting on a uniform gives them the right to do any g*m thing they please, I'm feeling a chill wind indeed.

I came that way from work at about 1:30a Sunday morning. The fog was so thick that you couldn't see to drive hardly. I did not see one car from the time I passed the cemetary till I reached Eudora. They sit out there every weekend anyways. And you usually do see the party bus and other traffic coming west from the Outhouse. I'd like to see a few drunk drivers get caught.

Well, Bad, at least they announce when and where. If you're dumb enough to A) Drive drunk B) Drive drunk down 15th street, you deserve a DUI.

Yeah! Taking drunks off the roadway! How Nazi-like can they get? It's a Constitutional violation! Drunks have the right to kill people!

We need to get the drunks off the roads. It is becoming more common than you think in Lawrence to drink and drive. Police rarely pull someone over due to lack of resources.

kinda like the TSA morons at airports. how stupid.

Those type of checkpoints are illegal. Get names, numbers, and find out what judge decided to sign off on this.

For all of you that didn't read the article......I asked for clarification...LJWorld is reporting that this was a "driver's license check lane" was scheduled. Just checking people's id's is NOT legal. DUI checkpoints are. This would be an excuse to LOOK for probably cause to make arrests. Welcome to the NEW America.....poof

Callin' it legal sure don't make it right. It's a lot more "police state" than "land of the free."Hold on, there's someone knocking at my door.....
