Baghdad U.S. deaths in Iraq fell in October to their lowest monthly level of the war, matching the record low of 13 fatalities suffered in July. Iraqi deaths fell to their lowest monthly levels of the year.
Eight of the 13 Americans died in combat, most of them in northern Iraq where al-Qaida and other Sunni insurgent groups remain active. The U.S. military suffered 25 deaths in September and 23 in August.
In Afghanistan, meanwhile, 15 U.S. military deaths were reported for October. The monthly toll in that combat theater had been in the 20s since June, when 28 Americans were killed - the worst one-month total since that war began in late 2001.

Why are we still spending billions of dollars and the lives of our soldiers on this? If the surge has worked so well then we should be ready to pull out right?

Only 13 killed? I'm sure their families are thrilled. As are the families of the 4200 already killed there who are still dead, not to mention the tens of thousands who've been maimed and crippled, who are still maimed and crippled. And we've still got at least a $3 trillion tab to pay off for this mess. And what did it get us? 4 million refugees who are victims of ethnic cleansing who can probably never return home, and a government incapable of doing much of anything, except perhaps plunge the country back into full-out civil war. Yea, the good news just keeps on coming.

Campaign rhetoric from the white house unjournalism staff. At $341,400,000 a day in Iraq this is no bargain. The money could be betters spent at home aka USA creating jobs that cannot be outsourced, funding HR676 medical insurance for all, developing new energy sources and prosecuting the republican administration for war crimes. The repub latest escapade into Syria is just another violation of international law just like Iraq. The USA government does not have unlimited authority around the world. Merrill - the article isn't about the war being a “bargain” or not, so shut it for a change, or at least attack the article, not just mindlessly copy and paste your trash like every other post on every other day. The article is about brave American soldier and how, even though 1 is too many to lose, at least we are not losing the horrific numbers we were before. We need to get out of Iraq, sure, but we won't tomorrow, so for tomorrow, I just hope no more Americans lose their lives. Jeez I'd be tempted to vote Repub just to cancel out your vote of annoyance.

Bozo: “… the 4200 already killed there who are still dead, not to mention the tens of thousands who've been maimed and crippled, who are still maimed and crippled.”Rumor has it that the current occupant talks to God.Perhaps he could negotiate a reprieve for 2-many thousands.Or, maybe, God just works in *mystifying* ways, employing evil men and dolts to realize the Divine Plan. What a meteoric swan dive for the Swaggering One.
