Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 30, 1908: “North Carolina went South Carolina one better by enacting absolute prohibition instead of fooling around with a state dispensary system. The Tar Heel voters seem to have understood that the motto of the Kansas State Temperance Union is correct: ‘The solution of the saloon problem is no saloon.’ We welcome North Carolina to our ranks as a dry state. : The Kaw River is rising fast here today after heavy rains upstream that are due to keep the stream on the rise. The Blue River is 11 feet above the danger line after rainfall of more than three inches. Rains have been heavy throughout the area and the tributaries of the Kaw and Platte River are running bank full. But unless the rains continue for another week, we may not have any flooding here.”
