Treasurer files for re-election

Paula Gilchrist is seeking a second term as Douglas County treasurer.

Gilchrist, a Democrat, filed for re-election on Wednesday. She said her office has accomplished a lot during the past three years in the areas of technology, operational efficiency and customer service.

“Changing procedures and processes that involve state regulations and numerous county departments can be frustratingly slow,” she said.

Gilchrist noted that she has actively invested the county’s idle funds and that she opened a part-time office in Baldwin City with little increase in her department budget.

Gilchrist was elected in 2004 and took office in 2005. She previously worked with business, government and nonprofit organizations.

Gilchrist became involved in Democratic Party politics in 1994 when she was a southeast Kansas district aide to former Congressman Jim Slattery. She holds a bachelor’s degree in elementary education and a master’s degree in psychology.
