Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for May 26, 1908: “The committee chosen by the university to erect markers at suitable places in and about Lawrence to indicate the spots where important events in the early history of the state transpired has decided upon the placing of three of the markers and has ordered the stones from the local marble works. These will mark the old Free State Hotel, the site of Gov. Robinson’s early home and the site of the fortifications erected on Mount Oread for the defense of Lawrence in 1863. The hotel markers will note the Free State Hotel burned by Sheriff Jones on May 21, 1856 and the Eldridge House burned by William Quantrill and his raiders on Aug. 21, 1863. The barracks and trenches on Mount Oread never were able to aid in the Quantrill strike. : The Haskell commencement dates this year are June 21-24 with the baccalaureate address on Sunday, June 21, by Dr. S.S. Estey of Topeka.”
