Summer concerts start Wednesday

The Lawrence City Band summer concert series kicks off at 8 p.m. Wednesday at South Park, 1141 Mass.

The series, sponsored by the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department and the Rice Foundation, will present a concert at 8 p.m. every Wednesday through July 16.

Concerts, conducted by Bob Foster, are free and open to the public.

Here’s the theme for each concert:

June 4: Classics for a Summer Night.

June 11: Lawrence City Band Showcase.

June 18: A Chautauqua Concert: Lawrence in the 1930s with guest conductor Col. Arnald D. Gabriel, U.S. Air Force, retired, and trombone soloist Michael Davidson.

June 25: Annual Children’s Concert.

July 2: A Star-Spangled Spectacular.

July 9: From Kansas City to New York to Vienna and Russia.

July 16: Season Finale including the “1812 Overture” and “Stars and Stripes Forever.”
