Planning Commission OKs Smart Code

The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission late Wednesday evening unanimously approved the Smart Code.

The new code would provide developers with an option to build neighborhoods that are more similar to older-style areas that mix residential types and allows for neighborhood commercial sites.

The code also allows some items of development plans to be approved by city staff members rather than by the Planning Commission or City Commission.

Planning commissioners approved the code on an 8-0 vote, with Commissioners Dennis Lawson and Jeff Chaney absent.

The code now must be approved by city commissioners. No date has been set for commissioners to hear the issue.
