The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission late Wednesday evening unanimously approved the Smart Code.

The new code would provide developers with an option to build neighborhoods that are more similar to older-style areas that mix residential types and allows for neighborhood commercial sites.

The code also allows some items of development plans to be approved by city staff members rather than by the Planning Commission or City Commission.

Planning commissioners approved the code on an 8-0 vote, with Commissioners Dennis Lawson and Jeff Chaney absent.

The code now must be approved by city commissioners. No date has been set for commissioners to hear the issue.

monkeyhawk, no. The neighborhod groups have been doing the planning and approval for the citycommission and planning commission. Cowboy, there have been plans coming in and out of Lawrence for the past 5 years, but the city moles along with the neighborhood groups and LAN have run them off. Now, does the city commission have the guts to bring the issue forward and vote. They do not need a hearing on this. If they do, it is another display of their ineptness to get things done and to make a decision. I am betting the city commission will stall the issue because they have no guts.. If they don't get their act together soon, they will be looking for another director in the planning department. This new guiy won't hang around long if the present stuttering continues with the commissioners.
