From the Lawrence Daily World of May 21, 1908: “The annual report of the local YMCA has been made public and shows that the agency had a highly productive year. Membership now numbers 379 : A member of Quantrill’s murderous raider band here has given his view of the sacking of Lawrence and says Quantrill felt forced to get even with the ‘red legs’ from Kansas. His story about the events differs quite a bit from what we know to be true and little credence should be lent to it.”
