Topeka ? House Speaker Melvin Neufeld, R-Ingalls, said Wednesday there will be no effort to override Gov. Kathleen Sebelius’ veto of a bill that would have authorized construction of two coal-fired power plants.

Neufeld, R-Ingalls, said scheduling conflicts and other circumstances made it impossible to try to muster the two-thirds majority needed to override a veto when lawmakers officially end the 2008 session on May 29.

The decision probably ends for this year legislative wrangling over the issue and sends the battle to the courts.

Sebelius rejected the two 700-megawatt coal-burning plants, citing environmental concerns over carbon dioxide emissions.

Neufeld, and other supporters, said the plants would be among the cleanest burning coal-fired units in the country, and would stimulate the Kansas economy.

Sebelius vetoed three measures addressing the plants. The last one was a bill that included several economic initiatives, including the power project.

While the Senate had a two-thirds majority to overturn a veto, Neufeld was unable to achieve that in the House.
