Firebirds snag 2nd at state swim meet

Highlighted by diver's third-place finish, Lawrence High finishes 14th

? Free State High’s swimming and diving team left Saturday’s state meet in Topeka with a laundry list of accomplishments.

In addition to finishing second in the team standings with 208 points, the Firebirds set two meet records – both of which were school records – and landed three girls on the all-state list that was announced at the conclusion of the meet.

“We’re happy,” FSHS coach Annette McDonald said. “We have to be. The girls really deserve what they got here; they worked really, really hard all season.”

Led by all-staters Molly Albrecht, Morgan Flannigan and Chloe Portela, the Firebirds won three individual state titles. That trio teamed with Reilly Moore to win the 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay, and Albrecht won the 200 freestyle on her own.

Lawrence High finished 14th in the team standings with 51 points. The majority of those came from senior diver Mallory West, who placed third in the diving competition.
