From the Lawrence Daily World for May 15, 1908: “Teachers are being advised about a county institute planned in the days ahead to improve our teaching methods and benefit the students. : Now that Lawrence has an ordinance forbidding shooting firecrackers on one day of the year, we hope the city fathers will turn their attention of the disturbances made by scratchy phonographs and untuned pianos the other 364 days of the year.”
