City, KU to discuss merging bus system

Mayor Mike Dever and other city leaders are scheduled to meet with Kansas University leaders today to discuss the feasibility of operating a merged public transit system.

Dever and other commissioners have said that figuring out a way to merge the city’s public transit system with KU’s student transit system may be the key to maintaining public transit service in the community.

Commissioners are trying to figure out how to deal with a projected $1 million shortfall in funding for the T system. Dever said at the commission’s Tuesday evening meeting that he wants to explore whether combining the two systems would create enough efficiencies to reduce the projected financial shortfall.
