From the Lawrence Daily World for May 12, 1908: “The planners for a local Law and Order League will hold a union prayer meeting at an organizational meeting Wednesday at the Methodist Church. : The work on the Christian Church, to cost about $40,000, has begun in earnest and it should be an outstanding building. : A fine horse belonging to the Lawrence Transfer Co. was killed when trail whistle startled a team on the university campus and caused the animals to bolt. One of the horses hit a tree and broke its neck, dying almost instantly. : An official statement in Topeka, issued March 31, establishes Kansas banks as ‘safe and sound’ and completely recovered from eastern panics that occurred last fall and winter. : Deposits in state banks grew more than $3.68 million since Dec. 3.”
