Jennifer Beasley, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the 2007 fall semester at the University of Dayton in Ohio. To be named to the dean’s list a student must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

¢Erin Levy, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the 2007 fall semester at Beloit College in Wisconsin by earning a grade point average of 3.4 or above. Levy is a freshman.

¢Joanna Loewen and Yuri Mitchell, both of Lawrence, were named to the fall 2007 dean’s list at Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa. A grade point average of at least 3.6 is required for this designation. Loewen and Mitchell are both sophomores.

¢Marguerite Schumm, Lawrence, is spending the spring 2008 semester in an overseas program through Syracuse University’s SU Abroad. Schumm, a sophomore, is participating in the Santiago, Chile, program.

¢The St. John Mexican Fiesta Scholarship committee announced the 2008 winners: Marisa E. Garcia, Melissa Ramirez-Naff, Maria Camarena-Mendez, Alexandria Gamboa and Kathleen Hermesch.

Ramirez-Naff, Camarena-Mendez and Hermesch are seniors at Lawrence High School. Garcia and Gamboa are seniors at Free State High School.

¢Douglas R. Wood, associate professor of zoology in the department of biological sciences at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, was honored on April 8 with the Award for Excellence in Teaching in Science and Technology. The award, based on student nominations, is presented annually to one faculty member in each of the university’s four major academic disciplines, including education, arts and sciences, business, and science and technology.

Wood is a 1988 graduate of Lawrence High School and the son of Keith and Barbara Wood, of Lawrence. He specializes in ornithology while teaching courses in biology, zoology and wildlife ecology at the university in Durant, Okla.

¢Heather Wilson, Ottawa, was a nominee for the Newberg Outstanding Senior recognition at Emporia State University. The nominees were honored at the Dwight & Ida Curry Newberg Outstanding Senior banquet on April 7. Only two nominees, out of 21 seniors, will be named Outstanding Senior and Distinguished Senior.

The Outstanding Senior receives a plaque and a $500 award, and the Distinguished Senior receives a plaque and a $250 award.

¢Jennifer Hornbaker, Lawrence, received the High Scholarship Award on March 30 at Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa. The award is given to undergraduate students and veterinary medicine professional students who rank in the top 2 percent of their college class.

¢Nakayla Robbs, Wellsville, presented her work at the Developing Scholars Program’s Eighth Annual Research Poster Presentation April 20 at the K-State Student Union ballroom. Her work is titled “Determination of the Efficacy of Vaccination Against Flea Allergy Dermatitis in a Canine Model.”

Robbs is a senior majoring in animal science and industry. She is a resident of Smurthwaite Scholarship Leadership House and the Horsemen’s Association. She earned a S.M.A.R.T. Grant, Wingert Scholarship and Delaware Indian Scholarship.

The Omicron Chapter of Alpha Chi Omega at Baker University will celebrate its centennial on May 17 at the chapter house in Baldwin City.

Marjorie Randall Maxwell, honorary centennial chair, will welcome alumnae, students and guests with various events, including historical displays, tours of the sorority house and a reception.

A centennial plaque will be dedicated by Donna Chereck, the sorority’s national president, at 5 p.m. before a centennial banquet at Harter Union.

¢Ashley Coffman, Lawrence, will perform in a music recital on May 6 at Bethany College in Lindsborg. The event will start at 2 p.m. in Presser Hall.

¢Kansas University announced winners of its 59th all-campus student-run Rock Chalk Revue on March 6-8 at the Lied Center. The theme was “Better Left Unsaid.”

Local winners by organization: Morgan Grissum, Baldwin City, Most Charitable Community Service Organization representative for Delta Delta Delta sorority; and Jaime Hornbaker, Lawrence, community service co-chair.

Lawrence winners by performance title: Flight of the Starquest – Joshua Gering, director, lead and original song; Abby Jones, choreography, original song, director; Lauren Precopia, best female chorus members, Brett Lawrence, best male chorus members; Welcome to Tune Town – Abbey Murray, director, lead, costume design, choreography, original song and best actress.

¢Janet and Thomas Fredendall, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Bryce Thomas Fredendall, born April 5, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

His maternal grandparents are Ralph and Amy Kitsmiller, Lawrence.

His paternal grandparents are Pat and Donna Fredendall, Washington, Mo.

His great-grandparents are Bob and Jane Fredendall, Washington, Mo., and Leonard and Evelyn Engemann, Dutzow, Mo.

¢Becky Ruhl, Lawrence, and Sue Schmidt, Baldwin City, both of Omicron Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, attended the annual Phi State Convention on April 11-13 at the Grand Prairie Hotel in Hutchinson. Ruhl received the First-Time Convention Award.
