4-H and FCE news

The 55th Annual Douglas County Spring Beef Show was April 26 in the Community Building at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds. It was sponsored by the Douglas County Livestock Association and the Kansas State Research and Extension Service, Douglas County. Karl Harborth, Erie, served as the official judge and worked his way through 99 beef cattle.

Forty-three 4-H and FFA members competed in the four age levels of showmanship. Annabelle Vaught, McLouth, was selected the champion in the 7-8 year-old class, and Grace Baxter, Overbrook, was selected reserve.

Judge Harborth paraded 45 prospective steers. Breed winners are as follows: Limousin – Dustin Hoyt, Lawrence; Maine Anjou – Lacey Moore, Tonganoxie; Shorthorn – Annabelle Vaught, McLouth; and Simmental – Justin Christie, Baldwin City.

Breed champions in the female show are as follows: Angus – Jackson Wingert, Wellsville; Brangus – Austin Harkrader, Tonganoxie; Shorthorn – Tayler Miles, Tonganoxie; and Simmental – Cambry Lynch, Eudora.

The Douglas County Livestock Association sponsored a special award for the top Douglas County steer and female. Justin Christie, Baldwin City, won the award for his steer and Cambry Lynch won for her female.

¢The Douglas County Kansas 4-H Foundation has announced the names of members who have been awarded college scholarships for the 2008-2009 school year.

Ralph G. and Cloyd B. Achning Memorial 4-H Scholarship winners:

Lawrence – Erin Ashcraft, Michelle Colgan, Callie Fishburn, Courtney Harris, Kelli Harris, Reagon Heikes, Kahlyn Heine, Rebecca Hinshaw, Alison Mesler, Grant Metsker, Marla Metsker, Braxton Nottingham, Conner Nottingham, Shon Price, and Libby Queen.

Baldwin City – John Brown, Wesley Callahan, Lindsey Hitchcock, Leah Hoelscher, Emily Krysztof, and Sam Wilson.

Eudora – Whitney Box, Jacob Cox, Kari Hadl, Timothy Moran, and Kyle Morgison.

Overbrook – Cybill Milburn.
