From the Lawrence Daily World for May 2, 1908: "A number of surprise tests are being conducted on railroads in the area to ensure safe travel. Officials say that so far the tests have been favorable but that they will continue. For example, running past a danger signal means an engineer's dismissal. During the past months, nearly 1,300 tests were made. : With warm weather, the Washington meetings of the Tennis Cabinet have resumed. The Tennis Cabinet is that favored coterie of office-holders and diplomats that President Roosevelt invites to test racquets with him out behind the White House and to discuss business without any outside intervention and probing. : Two parties of automobilists will conduct an endurance test run from Kansas City to Lawrence and back on May 16."
