Mother Earth often inspires those in the art world.

Some of those who have been inspired will perform Saturday at an event at Watson Park.

Oread Friends Meeting, a Quaker congregation in Lawrence, is staging the “Read-Out, Sing-Out, Speak-Out, Act-Out, Dance-Out on Earthcare,” a 12-hour event to promote environmentalism.

The event is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the park’s gazebo, with performers slated for 10-minute time slots.

“It’s kind of a wild event, in terms of what’s going to happen,” says Elizabeth Schultz, who is helping to organize the event.

Though it falls before the traditional April 22 Earth Day, Saturday’s performances are meant to bring the world of arts to the world of the environment. Around 77 acts have been chosen for the event, including research presentations, songs and poetry readings, among other art forms.

Also, local environmentalist Ken Lassman will lead a nature walk from Watson Park to Burcham Park at 10:20 a.m. Saturday.

Schultz says the event should help to broaden Earth Day activities.

“This is in the interest of not having a single Earth Day, but turning April into a whole Earth Month,” she says.
