Panel to discuss underage drinking

It’s a help session for parents about fighting underage drinking and drug use.

“There are some simple things parents can look at and see. It may be nothing, but you can ask your kid about it and find out why it’s happening,” said Kansas Highway Patrol Trooper Matt Payne.

Payne will be one of six speakers at the 6:30 p.m. meeting Monday at the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Facility, 200 Maine.

Members of the Douglas County Community Health Improvement Project invite parents to attend the session, which will be one that similar groups across the country will offer this year.

“By the fact that people show up to this town hall meeting gives the message that we’re all in this together, and we all have the same goal. That’s to keep our kids safe,” said Nancy Renfro, a Lawrence parent and business owner.

The meeting is sponsored by the Lawrence Task Force to Address Underage Drinking. The task force includes parents and representatives of the school district, law enforcement, Kansas University, the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office and DCCCA, an organization whose mission includes prevention and treatment of alcohol abuse.
