A 21-year-old Lawrence man pleaded guilty this morning to two charges stemming from a sexual assault last December.

Benjamin A. Meeks entered the pleas to aggravated battery and aggravated sexual battery. He had been scheduled to stand trial on Monday on one count of rape.

This morning, Meeks told Douglas County District Judge Michael Malone that he drove a woman from Club Axis, 821 Iowa, to his apartment in the 2400 block of Alabama, where he sexually assaulted her and hit her in the face. The attack occurred Dec. 28.

Malone set sentencing for May 9. Meeks faces up to 172 months in prison on the aggravated battery charge and up to 34 months in prison on the aggravated sexual battery charge. Kevin Babbit, Meeks’ attorney, said he planned to seek a psychological evaluation of his client before sentencing.
