Students from Lawrence junior high and home schools performed at an honors recital on March 9 that concluded the Washburn University College Music Educators National Conference annual Junior High and Middle School Solo Festival.

Performers were Chesney Buck and Grace Clark, Central Junior High School; Adriane Dick, Nolan Frank, Victoria Gilman, and Elizabeth Marks, West Junior High School; and Sarah Gaskin, Encore Home School Fine Arts.

Ruth Penny, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. To be named to the dean’s list students must earn a grade-point average of 3.4 to 3.7.

Eric Akers and Vicki Collie-Akers, Elizabeth City, N.C., announce the birth of their son, Andrew Atticus Collie-Akers, born March 10, 2008, in Elizabeth City, N.C. His maternal grandparents are Gerry and Kim Collie, Lawrence. His paternal grandparents are Jim and Jan Akers, Lawrence. His great-grandparents are Curt and Glennyce Porter, Livermore, Calif.

Douglas County Bank will celebrate National Art Education Youth Art Month with artwork by Free State High School students. The displays will be at the bank branch at 4340 W. Sixth St. through Wednesday.

Drawings on display are the works of Copper Ramburg, Mulligan Greenwell, Darci Rodecap, Katie Bracciano, Cali Burke, Cody Fotovich, Clara Groene, Ellen Howat, Scott Wayland, Jon Marzetti, Kali Conrad, Kaidee Docktor, Emma Fulton, Alexa Clements, Hannah Lodwick, Eileen Richling, Sam Foster, Sam Willger, Natalize Loeb and Genny Salvatore.

Photography pieces on display are the works of Natalie Lesnikowski, Cody Fotovitch, Hannah Frydman, Amy Coons, Bryanna Gilstrap, Michelle Wilson, Rebecca Dreyfus, Mark Jongman-Sereno, Pearl Martin-Eagle, Mulligan Greenwell, Katie Ice, Akina Kashiwaya, Sarah Stern, Maddie Glass, Winston Heilman, May Simpson, Taeler King, Taylor Morgan and Margaret Gathunguri.

Ellen Howat, Free State High School senior, was awarded a $500 scholarship on March 1 for Youth Art Month. The Kansas Art Education Association featured her work in an art exhibit at the Capitol through March 14.

Bridget Rocha, Lawrence Virtual School junior, was chosen as the first student to represent virtual schools in the Youth Art Month art show. One art student from each school in the state is chosen to represent his or her school at the Capitol in Topeka. A reception was given on March 1 for students and their families.

Will Lawrence, Lawrence, has been elected as a senator of Washburn University Student Government Association. His term of office will run from April 2008 to April 2009. Lawrence is a junior majoring in political science.

Brooke Carter, Lawrence, has been awarded the Golden Griffon scholarship to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph. The award provides students with full tuition, room and board and is valued at up to $10,000 per year.

Three Lawrence students earned academic honors for the fall 2007 semester at Oklahoma Christian University in Oklahoma City. Senior Lindsay McKinney was named to the president’s honor roll with a 4.0 grade-point average. Senior Nicholas Sayre and sophomore Marshall Sayre were named to the honor roll by earning at least a 3.4 GPA.

Molly Bunch, Lawrence, made the chancellor’s list for the fall 2007 semester at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, by earning a grade-point average of 4.0.

Kathy Thilges, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list for the fall 2007 semester at the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls. Thilges received a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and graduated with high honors in December.

Students from Central Junior High School entered the District History Day competition on March 8 at Lawrence High School. Competitions were conducted in the categories of exhibit, performance, paper, Web site and documentary.

CJHS winners were: senior group exhibit, Grace Clark and Grace Bova, second; senior group documentary, Phebe Myers and Calvert Pfannenstiel, first, and Liza Farr, Alyson Frydman, Tess Frydman, and Zoe Limesand, third; senior individual documentary, Zoey Hearn-Feldman, third, and Anrai Richards, fourth;

Junior group exhibit, Sophie Laufer and Sophie Tate, first; junior group documentary, Maria Watson and Grace Goulding, first; junior individual documentary, Nora Byers, first, and Rosie O’Brien, third;

Junior group performance, Elsa Latare, Claire Limesand, Maya Conner and Camas Buerger, first, and Lidia Strecker, Gaia Morgan and Ella Gore, second.

First and second place winners advance to the state level competition on April 26 at Washburn University in Topeka.

Dylan Warrington, Lawrence High School sophomore, left March 14 on a trip to Italy. The trip is sponsored by LHS and is called Destination Rome. The students will visit Rome, Pompeii and other destinations in Italy. They will return to Lawrence on Sunday.

Dylan is the son of Tammy Herschell, Lawrence, and Duane Warrington, Eudora.

Melissa Moss, Tonganoxie, was sworn in as a member of Volunteers in Service to America, or VISTA. Moss will be working for Kansas Public Health Association in Topeka as a statewide training coordinator and will be based out of the Lawrence-Douglas County Health Department.

Moss will assist the health department staff with in-service and public education. She will also put together regional workshops on various health issues such as the public health system, disease prevention, immunizations and epidemiology.

Larry Williams will be inducted into the Southwestern College Educators Hall of Fame in Winfield. A reception will be at 3:30 p.m. April 19, followed by the induction of new hall of fame members at 4 p.m.

Williams taught music in elementary, junior high, high school and college for 45 years. In his first 18 years of teaching, he taught band, orchestra and humanities in Ottawa, Topeka, and Lawrence.
