Douglas County FCE in cooperation with Kansas State Research and Extension Family and Consumer Sciences announce their April program “African Violets.” Della Hadley, representing the Lawrence African Violet Club, will give a brief history of these favorite houseplants in their journey from Africa to England to the United States. She will show a few of the varieties created by hybridiaing and give some hints for growing them in homes. Deadline for registration is April 4. The event will be at 9:30 a.m. on April 11 in Deal Six Auditorium at the Douglas County Fairgrounds. For more information, call 843-7058.

Clinton Eagles 4-H club met Feb. 25 at Wakarusa Valley. The meeting was called to order by Kirstyn Heine, vice-president. Amanda Snodgrass and Connor Shuck led the club in singing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.” Roll call was answered by what is your favorite cookie. Delaney Dieker, secretary, read the minutes of the December meeting. They were approved by the club. Dustin Hoyt, treasurer, gave a report on finances. Dalton Walsh, county council representative, announced the council needed ideas for community service. Morgan Manager, reporter, announced the report had been printed in the Lawrence Journal-World. Chris Gaston, parliamentarian, taught the club to correctly answer roll call and gave candy to those who did correctly. Lanaea Heine, community leader, talked about county club days, regional club days, and project information requests. The Swap Meet committee reminded the club of the upcoming Swap Meet on May 2, 3, and 4. Kristie Wempe, sheep leader, informed the club about upcoming dates concerning the sheep project. Charlie Garzillo, poultry leader, announced he placed the order for birds for the fair. Steve Dieker announced there was a countywide swine meeting and a weigh-in for market beef for the fair will be soon. Lisa Gaston showed the club the new scholarship guidelines that need to be passed. Tessa Lieber move to accept the guidelines and it was seconded. The motion was passed. The next meeting will be March 24 at Wakarusa Valley.

4-H youth from Douglas, Franklin, Johnson, Miami, Osage, Shawnee, and Wyandotte Counties participated in the Regional 4-H Club Day event on March 15 at Lawrence High School. The event was hosted by Douglas County 4-H.

Top purple ribbon winners were: Mason Kelso (two), Matthew Kelso, Brianna Landon (three), Taylor Davis, Morgan Manger, Blaire Landon (two), Blythe Landon, Tucker Gabriel, and Jamie Morgison.

Alternate top purple ribbon winners were: Henry Mitchell, Ryal Mitchell, Mason Kelso, Brianna Landon, Addison Jones, Matthew Kelso and Rowan Plinsky.

Purple ribbon winners were: Lucile Somers, Addison Jones and Mesfen Oliver.

Blue ribbon winners were: Blythe Landon, Ryal Mitchell, Eudora 4-H Club, Stull Busy Beavers 4-H Club, Justin Leonard, Ethan Horne and Candice Meiners.

Red ribbon winners were: Taylor Davis and Lucile Somers.
