Kansas basketball coach Ted Owens was fired by athletic director Monte Johnson who said he “felt it necessary to make a change now in order to return the program to the consistent level of national recognition it had enjoyed in the past.” Owens had been head coach for 19 years and had taken the Jayhawks to postseason tournaments nine times, including the NCAA Final Four in 1971 and 1974.
