Giddens scores 26 in finale

J.R. Giddens’ college basketball career is over.

California edged New Mexico, 68-66, in an NIT first-round game Wednesday night despite 26 points, 13 rebounds and six assists from Giddens.

A transfer from Kansas University, Giddens led the Lobos to a school-record 24 regular-season victories and was named co-Mountain West Conference player of the year.

A 6-foot-5 senior from Oklahoma City, Giddens compiled MWC-high averages of 18.3 points and 8.3 rebounds a game in conference action. He scored a career-high 36 points against Wyoming.
