Despicable theft

To the editor:

On Feb. 16, Boy Scout Troop 59, chartered to First Presbyterian Church, hosted their annual chili feed. This is the troop’s big fundraiser, which helps pay for camping equipment and troop activities for 80 registered Scouts. This event could not be successful without the support of local business donors and volunteers.

The 2008 chili feed started out with a disaster. The tank of propane generously donated by Terry Cox and Superior Refrigeration and Heating had been stolen! We were shocked. The Scouts use the propane to heat two large burners. They stir gigantic pots of chili (donated by Runza) with canoe paddles. We had no way to heat 400 pounds of chili.

After filling out a police report, we reluctantly called Terry Cox. He could not have been more understanding or helpful. Superior quickly delivered another tank to the church. Amazing! To the thieves: You stole a 100-pound tank worth $250 for a little bit of propane. The tank is so heavy you needed at least two people and a truck to steal it. This took planning. You stole from a church and Boy Scouts. You are despicable.

To Terry Cox and Superior Refrigeration and Heating, we give a huge cheer of thanks!! The most heartwarming part was when I contacted Terry to discuss tank replacement costs, he told me that he would absorb the cost and to call again next year! WOW!
