Detective describes scene in second-degree murder hearing

A Lawrence police detective described finding a bloody scene Feb. 2 inside a southeastern Lawrence trailer during a second-degree murder preliminary hearing this morning for Jerod Buffalohead, 36, and Shanna Friday, 37.

Prosecutors accuse the two of killing Jerry Deshazer, 62, in his mobile home at Brookwood Mobile Home Park, 1908 E. 19th St.

Another witness said he saw Buffalohead punch Deshazer about five times inside the home a few hours before someone found Deshazer’s body inside the trailer.

“The biggest challenge we had at the scene was a large amount of apparent blood that was located inside the trailer,” Detective David Axman said. “Especially in the living room area, there was apparent blood on the floor, on the walls, the windows, items in the trailer. There was also apparent blood located in the kitchen in two of the three bedrooms, both bathrooms. It was a very disturbed scene with apparent blood.”

Axman described more than 20 photos police took of the home. Deshazer’s body was found in a bathroom, and his head was bloody.

Deshazer’s family members stayed inside the courtroom where the photos were projected onto a screen. At least one relative and Friday, the defendant, cried when photos of Deshazer’s body were shown.

Another witness, Jarvis Jones, a Haskell Indian Nations University student, said a group of people, including Buffalohead and Friday, had been drinking whiskey the evening of Feb. 1 at Deshazer’s home.

Deshazer had an argument at one point with Friday, who had been living at Deshazer’s home, but they made up. Jones said he understood that both Friday and Buffalohead had owed Deshazer money.

Jones later blacked out from drinking and slept on Deshazer’s couch, but he said he woke up at one point and saw Buffalohead put a blanket over Deshazer as he sat in a recliner. Buffalohead then punched Deshazer “about five times” while Friday encouraged him, Jones said.

Deshazer was bloody and eventually he crawled into a bathroom, Jones said. Later that morning, someone else woke Jones up. He said they discovered Deshazer’s body and called police.

Amy McGowan, a chief assistant Douglas County district attorney, said detectives who interviewed Buffalohead and Friday would testify this afternoon. The medical examiner would also likely take the stand today or Tuesday, she said.

Douglas County District Court Judge Robert Fairchild is hearing evidence to decide whether Buffalohead and Friday should face a trial.

An intentional second-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of between about 12 and 54 years in prison.
