Help still sought in shooting case

The Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office has renewed its request for the public’s help in solving the shooting of a 5-year-old Linwood girl.

Sheriff Dave Zoellner said he doesn’t know whether the Feb. 23 shooting was an accidental or criminal incident. He is still waiting on results of tests conducted by a private firm of firearms experts. Those results may tell investigators where the gunshot came from and how far away the gunman was.

Katherine Cook suffered a head wound while playing in her back yard at 12480 170th St., which is about 4 miles east of Linwood. She remains in a Kansas City area hospital. Over the weekend she was moved from intensive care to a rehabilitation room.

“What we’re asking for is anyone in that area, and particularly east of that area, that might have been shooting that day to contact us,” Zoellner said.

The number to call is (913)-758-4082.
