KU tennis edges New Mexico, 4-3

Lauren Hommell doesn’t mind serving as the No. 6 singles player for Kansas University’s tennis team.

She’s just happy to be playing after sitting out the fall semester because of injury. And KU couldn’t be more happy to have the senior back.

For the second straight match, Hommell clinched a Kansas victory over a ranked opponent. This time it was a 4-3 victory Sunday over No. 46 New Mexico at First Serve Tennis Center.

“I feel the pressure, but I feel like it helps me a lot, too,” Hommell said of playing in the No. 6 spot. “I knew that it was coming down to me, so I was just trying to stay positive and stay upbeat.”

On Wednesday, Hommell rallied from a set down to lead KU to a 4-3 decision over No. 67 Kansas State in Manhattan.

Hommell was part of the No. 2 doubles team with Kunigunda Dorn that helped the Jayhawks (5-5 overall, 1-0 in Big 12 Conference) sweep the doubles matches to earn the early point against the Lobos.

Dorn and Hommell topped Victoria Tessmar and Jennifer Ryba, 8-3, with Magdalena Tokarczyk and Yuliana Svistun winning the No. 3 doubles, 8-5.

“It was pretty surprising. I thought we’d win the doubles point, but not get the full sweep,” Hommell said. “That gives us a lot more confidence, and it’s a lot easier if you win the doubles point to win those 4-3 matches.”

Ryba was also the victim of Hommell’s sweep in the singles match, 6-3, 6-2.

KU’s Edina Horvath continued her strong junior season with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles to bring her record to 8-2. She and Elizaveta Avdeeva paired to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-5.

“Edina definitely has the confidence out there right now,” Kansas coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “Each year she’s gotten better and better, and I’m just very proud of her performance. She’s helping in leading the team as well. I don’t want to say it’s a match that we can count on, but I can always count on Edina giving 110 percent.”

The Jayhawks will return to Big 12 Conference play Friday when they travel to Colorado.
