Central Junior High School’s Science Olympiad team, the Zebras, placed fifth at the regional competition at Johnson County Community College on Feb. 23. The team took medals in 15 of 23 events. Event participants were as follows: Grace Clark, Claire Murphy-Beach, Cal Pfannenstiel, Kylie Puckett, Jacob Wilson, Erica Crandon, Natasha Carr, Willie Johnson, Olivia Marshall, Kaity Melvin, Paige Miller, Forrest Munro, Scott Richardson, Dale Roussel, Ian Gent and Carmel Sivron, manager.
Cindy Wilbur, Julie Battaglia, and Mandana Ershadi-Hurt coach the students. Bob Gent assisted and helped chaperone the school trip.

Cynthia Woodhead, Lawrence, was named to the first semester honorable mention honor roll at Central Christian College of Kansas in McPherson, with a grade-point average between 3.0 and 3.29. She is the daughter of Richard and Carolyn Woodhead.

The Johnson County Community College Model United Nations team won three outstanding delegation awards for its portrayal of Cuba and Peru at the Midwest Model United Nations Conference in St. Louis on Feb. 13-16.
The team also won two honorable mention awards. One honorable mention award went to Jason Beury, Lawrence, for his portrayal of Cuba’s policy position on the “Implementation of the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-personnel Mines and on Their Destruction.”

Free State High School and Cordley School won first place team trophies in the K-12 and K-6 divisions, respectively, on March 1 at the Free State High School scholastic chess tournament, at Ottawa Middle School. Lawrence High School earned the second place trophy in K-12, as did Wakarusa Valley School in K-6. Eudora Middle School and Quail Run School captured the third place trophies in K-8 and K-6, respectively.

Timothy Hofer, son of Rodney and Roberta Hofer, Lawrence, completed a master’s degree in mathematics, computer science and applications from the University of Paris 1: Pantheon Sorbonne. His specialty is mathematical models and methods in economics and finance. In addition, the French government granted him full funding to continue his research at the doctoral level at Sorbonne.

Ashley Coffman, a senior at Bethany College, has been selected to perform in Handel’s “Messiah” and Bach’s “St. Matthew Passion.” Coffman, of Lawrence, is a soprano. Performance of “Messiah” will be at 3 p.m. on March 16 and 23; “St. Matthew Passion” will be at 7:30 p.m. on March 21. Both performances will be with the Bethany Oratorio Society in Presser Hall on the Bethany College campus in Lindsborg.

Jim and Tracee Sowers, Lawrence, announce the birth of their son, Anderson James Sowers, born Jan. 23, 2008, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. His grandparents are Brent and Kris Anderson, Hutchinson, and Jerry Sowers, Atchison. His great-grandparents are Kent and Ruth Hatfield, Hutchinson, and Anna Sowers, Atchison.

Laura Windheuser, Lawrence, was named to the scholars list at Texas Christian University, Fort Worth, for the fall 2007 semester. by earning a grade-point average of 4.0.
