Former City Manager named interim museum director

Former Lawrence City Manager Mike Wildgen now is part-time interim director of Watkins Community Museum of History, 1047 Mass.

Wildgen began his job Monday. He will hold the position until the Douglas County Historical Society Board of Directors can find a permanent replacement. Former museum director Rebecca Phipps was dismissed last month.

Wildgen was hired because he brings management expertise and contacts, historical board chairwoman Phyllis Tiffany said.

Tiffany said the board doesn't know how long it will take to hire a director.

"Money is the issue," Tiffany said. "To get a really top-flight, experienced person, we're going to have to look awfully hard at what we can offer them and how hard we can work to raise that kind of money."

Wildgen needs to insist that the Board of Directors be reduced ASAP to no more than 5. He needs to make personal contact with former donors and solicit their advice. He also needs to decide what the building is to be used for? What is going to be the purpose of the building. Is it to be a looksie museum, decorated by Elvira Angeletti, or just what it is now, not much ado about nothing. Remove all historical papers, documents from it. Place them at the Carnegie Building. Use the Carnegiie buildig as a historical county research library. If not, then this whole thing is a waste of time.

How much is Mike going to be paid? And where does the money come from? I do find it interesting that Mike is hired to direct the museum but wasnt' good enough for the commissioners to run the city. hmmmmm????
