Law enforcement continues search for shooter

A girl suffering from a gunshot wound to the head remains in intensive care and continues to use a ventilator to breathe, according to this week's hot line recordings that update her condition.

Katherine Cook, 5, is at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where she was taken after the Feb. 23 shooting outside her Linwood-area home. Her intercranial pressure remained "mostly good" on Tuesday, according to Wednesday's recording. She remains unconscious.

Earlier recorded statements said that a physical therapist was able to get Katherine to move her left big toe and squeeze her right hand on command. Therapeutic boots have been placed on the girl's feet. They will help when it comes time for her to regain her ability to walk.

Meanwhile, the Leavenworth County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the shooting. Investigators are awaiting the results of tests that might determine which direction the bullet came from and how far away the shooter was, Sheriff Dave Zoellner said.

Katherine was playing in her backyard on the afternoon of the shooting. There were no signs of the gunman. Zoellner declined to speculate whether the shooting was accidental or criminal.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call detectives at (913) 758-4082.

Katherine's such a strong girl! (those of you who listen to the messages probably have heard this...) but she's going through more as a 5 year old than most normal people will ever have to go through (medically) in our whole lives... keep praying for her to have strength, and for her family especially! I know they appreciate the prayers!

Update on Katherine. She is still unconsious, however her mom says that she is feeling everything around her like a blind person. She is breathing well on her own. and she is down to just one IV. She has a neck brace on because she fell when she was hit, and hospital policy is to keep it on until they can rule out spine injury but answering questions, and since she is still unconsious, she can't answer questions, and they can't do a MRI because of the probe in her head monituring pressure. However they were hoping to get it out today (I haven't heard if they were able to) Anyway the neck brace bugs her and she keeps trying to get it off. She is making improvements, but she is still critical. Keep praying. And donations can be made to the Katherine Cook Trust Fund and labettebank.com The family is feeling all the loves and prayers and they appreciates it. They ask to keep it up :)

I am touched by the love and prayers from the community. Please continue to pray. I feel so strongly that our united faith will help little Katherine through this. Also please continue to pray for the family, they are going through so much. Thank you Multidisciplinary and Raeshumak for encouraging people to donate. labettebank.com or commercialbank.net the Katherine Cook trust fund. As a friend of the family I feel so strongly that we need to keep this story alive so people will not tire of praying for them. I worry about the whole family, we need to pray with all our faith, and ask for healing. These children need to feel like they can play outside again. Please who ever did this.. turn yourself in.. please.
I was moved by Katherine's mom's comment on the hotline that said she mourned the loss of her old life where her children were all safely tucked into their beds... then todays messages said that she recognizes and is grateful for the tender mercies from the Lord. I see her spirits lift, and she even commented "Its late, I am going to try to get some sleep in the waiting area" I am grateful that she is feeling she can get some sleep. Thank you everyone for praying, keep it up, and always remember that miracles happen.. keep things positive. Let God guide your prayers. thanks
