Bigger problem

Potholes are a problem, but the overall condition of Lawrence streets is a much greater concern.

Yes, Lawrence has potholes that need to be fixed, but the bigger question is what are Lawrence officials going to do about the entire local street system? And how soon can work start on this massive project?

For one reason or another, the street system is falling apart. Last year, a report stated a large percentage of the streets are in such bad shape they will have to be replaced while others need various levels of repair.

It is a highly costly project and one that needs immediate attention. At a time when there are many requests for city funding, city officials need to give serious attention to each project and decide which deserves the highest priority. The city is short of cash, and Lawrence residents deserve sound fiscal management by our elected officials and others at City Hall.

Again, when will the city street situation be addressed?
