About 25 percent to 40 percent of all dogs in this country are overweight or obese, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association. Just as it is in humans, excess weight is associated with health problems, including heart disease, arthritis and breathing problems. Studies have shown that many owners have no idea what the ideal weight for their breed of dog is.

As part of a new public service program sponsored by pharmaceutical maker Pfizer Animal Health and supported by the American Kennel Club Humane Fund, veterinarians across the country have signed up to do a free weight-assessment, including breed-specific information, on dogs that are brought in during the month of February. Educational materials on the health implications of canine obesity are also provided.
