HINU women in league finals

? Haskell Indian Nations University’s women’s basketball team avenged a pair of double-digit losses to Oklahoma Wesleyan on Friday and has advanced to the finals of the Midlands Collegiate Athletics Conference Tournament.

Lois Stevens scored 18 points, Kortney Smith 17 and Myriah Harris 15 for Haskell, which won, 69-64, and will meet College of the Ozarks at 7 p.m. today for a spot in the national tournament March 11-16 in Sioux City, Iowa.

Earlier in the day, Smith and Whitney Warrior were named first-team all-league.

“They (Haskell players) were a little stunned. We all are a little stunned. We’ve got eight people, and (Sharon) Forte was on the bench with foul problems. We had a seven-man rotation. Everybody came through,” coach Phil Homeratha said.

“This is the second straight year Haskell made the finals. We were not expected to both times,” he added. “We came down here with the idea we play as hard as we can or go home.

“Now I have to convince ’em we have nothing to lose.”
