Delgado drives in nine in opener; Ponson shines

Mets 15-0, Yankees 6-9

New York – Sidney Ponson pitched a gem in his return to the New York Yankees, silencing Carlos Delgado and the rest of the New York Mets for a 9-0 victory Friday night and a split of their two-ballpark doubleheader.

Delgado dominated the day game at Yankee Stadium. He set a Mets record with nine RBIs and hit a grand slam for one of his two homers in a 15-6 rout that lasted 3 hours, 54 minutes.

After both teams received police escorts for their rush-hour bus trips to Shea Stadium, Bobby Abreu went 4-for-4 with a walk and three RBIs as the Yankees enjoyed a blowout of their own. Ponson outpitched Pedro Martinez with six shutout innings, and the Bronx Bombers broke loose in Queens for their first victory in four Subway Series games this season.

Minneapolis – Joe Mauer hit a go-ahead solo homer in the eighth inning to lift Minnesota over Milwaukee for its 10th straight victory, all against NL teams.

White Sox 10, Cubs 3

Chicago – Nick Swisher’s grand slam capped a seven-run third inning against Ryan Dempster, and the White Sox beat the Cubs at U.S. Cellular Field.

Indians 6, Reds 0

Cleveland – C.C. Sabathia struck out 11 over eight innings, including Ken Griffey Jr. three times. Grady Sizemore hit his 18th homer, drove in three runs and made a spectacular catch as Cleveland won for the first time in four meetings with its intrastate rival this season.

Rangers 8, Phillies 7

Arlington, Texas – Milton Bradley hit the tiebreaking home run, Chris Davis homered in his first major-league start, and Texas beat slumping Philadelphia.

Athletics 4, Giants 1

Oakland, Calif. – Dana Eveland pitched his second-longest outing of the year to win his second straight decision, Jack Hannahan drove in two runs, and Oakland extended its winning streak against San Francisco to seven games.

Tigers 7, Rockies 1

Detroit – Eddie Bonine limited Colorado to five hits over eight innings to lift Detroit. Curtis Granderson was 4-for-5 with two triples for Detroit.

Rays 10, Pirates 5

Pittsburgh – Evan Longoria and Eric Hinske hit three-run homers off the Pirates’ Jimmy Barthmaier in his major-league debut.

Nationals 4, Orioles 2

Washington – Pinch-hitter Kory Casto doubled in the tiebreaking run in the seventh inning and scored on a single by Elijah Dukes to carry Washington to its second straight victory following a four-game skid.

Mariners 5, Padres 2

San Diego – Jarrod Washburn won for the first time in eight starts, and Seattle beat Randy Wolf and San Diego despite stranding a franchise-record 18 base-runners.

Braves 4, Blue Jays 0

Toronto – Mark Teixeira hit a two-run homer, and Jair Jurrjens pitched a career-high eight innings. Jurrjens (8-3) allowed just three hits – all singles – and didn’t allow a runner to reach second base. He turned it over to Mike Gonzalez for the ninth.

Red Sox 6, Astros 1

Houston – Daisuke Matsuzaka limited the Astros to two hits in five scoreless innings, and Boston won its first-ever regular-season game in Houston.

Dodgers 6, Angels 0

Los Angeles – Chan Ho Park shut out the Angels over his six innings, and Andre Ethier hit a three-run homer. Park (3-2) scattered four hits, struck out seven and did not walk a batter.

Marlins 3, Diamondbacks 1

Miami – Ricky Nolasco pitched eight effective innings, and Cody Ross homered to lift Florida.
