A large plane flying low on the west side of Lawrence Monday appears to be a military plane, according to Douglas County emergency dispatchers.

A sheriff's deputy has seen the plane and reported that it looks like a military in-air refueling plane, a dispatcher said.

There is a refueling unit based at Forbes Field in Topeka.

What kind of retard would even be concerned or complain over a low flying plane. They do it 2-3 times EVERY YEAR.

It flew over our place on the west side of Clinton Lake yesterday. It took me about 2 seconds to figure out it was a Military plane flying to Forbes Field. Happens all the time.

I guess they ruled out terrorists because the pilots appeared to avoid crashing into things. Or maybe it is just a new cost-savings method from the airlines. They fly low, and you jump. Parachutes are $15 extra, of course.

It came right over my house at 12:55 p.m. But I live in East Lawrence. Go figure. It was obviously a refueling tanker for the Air Force. Is this really news? If so, we're all total hicks.

That's good to know. Military planes fly over Lawrence from time to time, even helicopters. On the Fourth of July, we even had a B-1 Bomber fly over until City leaders told the military to stop because the stoned beatniks freaked out about the "war bird of death" fly over messing with their trip. I had a Blue Heron land on my back deck in west Lawrence. Could that be breaking news as well?

Why wasn't this breaking news? Why isn't there a video?

I can see cause for mild alarm. You don't expect such a thing, and they are louder than normal airliners.

Wow, THAT instills a lot of confidence in their observational powers if they reported that it "appears to be a military plane" and "it looks like a military in-air refuling plane." _____A large plane flying low on the west side of Lawrence Monday appears to be a military plane, according to Douglas County emergency dispatchers.A sheriff's deputy has seen the plane and reported that it looks like a military in-air refueling plane, a dispatcher said.

Holy smokes! It appears to be military! A Kc-135? You don't say. Go over to Topeka on that ribbon of concrete that appears to be an interstate highway and you can see one of those beasts hanging low in the sky most any day. They are a top notch outfit, the 190th and distinguished themselves in the first Gulf War.

June 23, 2008, 1:15 p.m. Updated 1:15 p.m.d--n! that mike belt, he can really whip out a wquick update! it was spotted over east lawrence? wow, can we tie this to the crosstown tavern shooting? or, while they flew over they dropped a top secret, need-to-know-only, object into Potter's lake. it is designed to change all the students of ku into hard working students who can read and actually write complete sentences.
or, it was flown by one of 'white owl's' nam buddies? wanted to scope out his squeeze?

There are several KC-135s at Forbes (190 ARW). If it was any louder than a regular airliner, it was due to its altitude most likely. The KC-135Es are being converted to KC-135Rs which have quieter, more efficient engines. That having been said, the KC-135 is still a big freakin airplane and I can understand the alarm if one of those was unusually low.

compmd (Anonymous) says:"That having been said, the KC-135 is still a big freakin airplane and I can understand the alarm if one of those was unusually low."It is huge. A number of years ago I had one come over at the height of about 10 telephone poles at night with all of its navigation and landing lights on but gear up about 40 miles from McConnell Air Force base. It was so low and slow we were sure it was going down into the field south of us. Just as it gets over head all the sudden all hell broke loose as the pilot must have pushed the throttle through the firewall and begins to climb away from us.The next day we pulled out some charts and realized we were directly off the end of the N/S runway. The only thing we could figure is that the pilot was under the hood shooting instrument approaches and the instructor decided not to let him know how far off he was till the last moment. It made quite an impression and is something none of us will ever forget.
