From the Lawrence Daily World for June 22, 1908: “The official population of Lawrence is now 13,174, a gain of 787 over the count of a year ago. At this rate of growth, Lawrence will within three years have more than enough people to be declared a first-class city under the statutes of Kansas. To gain a first-class rating, Lawrence must have at least 15,000 residents :”
