Flooding disrupts Amtrak service

Rail service offers buses to travelers

Flooding along the Mississippi River and its tributaries is disrupting rail service across the Midwest.

Amtrak’s Southwest Chief line, running between Kansas City, Mo., and Galesburg, Ill., is suspended until at least Friday. Buses are replacing train service in the meantime. The buses will not include service to La Plata, Mo., or Fort Madison, Iowa. Passengers with tickets for those destinations are being offered travel at other Amtrak stations in Illinois.

Amtrak spokesman Marc Magliari said rail travel from Kansas City to Lawrence may be disrupted as well because westbound trains must wait for buses to arrive from other locations before they leave Kansas City.

He recommended travelers check departure times to Lawrence, while looking for updates on Amtrak’s Web site, www.amtrak.com.
