Murphy, Rangers slam Royals, 11-5
Kansas City, Mo. ? David Murphy hit two home runs, including his first career grand slam, and drove in a career-high five runs to help the Texas Rangers beat the Kansas City Royals, 11-5, Wednesday night.
Texas trailed, 5-1, after six innings, but sent 10 men to the plate in a seven-run seventh, matching its biggest inning of the season. Relievers Jeff Fulchino and Jimmy Gobble faced seven Rangers in the inning without retiring a batter.
Murphy, who leads all AL rookies with 46 RBIs and 77 hits, homered into the right-field grass on a 2-0 pitch from Gobble (0-2). The grand slam came after Josh Hamilton hit an RBI single and Milton Bradley walked to load the bases.
Murphy then led off a three-run ninth inning with a homer off Brett Tomko for his first career multi-homer game.
Vicente Padilla (8-3) picked up the victory and is 6-1 in his past nine starts, although he allowed five runs, four earned, on seven hits in six innings.
The Royals, who also squandered a four-run lead in a loss to Texas the previous night, have lost 19 of 23 games.
Mark Grudzielanek drove in four runs for Kansas City.
