From the Lawrence Daily World for June 11, 1908: “The river has fallen another 14 inches in the past 24 hours and the cleanups are beginning, particularly in the North Lawrence lowlands. A big, 16-inch gas main broke today at the old river channel and Leavenworth, Atchison and St. Joseph are without gas. There is no immediate estimate of the loss and damage but it is due to be much worse than first thought.”
