Two Kansas University football players have left the team, the school announced Tuesday. Senior defensive lineman Todd Haselhorst left on his own for “health reasons,” and junior cornerback Anthony Webb was dismissed for a violation of team policy, according to team spokesman Mike Strauss.

Webb played in 12 games and started nine as a freshman, but played sparingly in the secondary as a sophomore, when he returned 19 punts for 16 yards. Webb has told others he plans to resume his football career by transferring to an as-yet-unknown school.

Haselhorst said he left the team last week.

“I’ve always had stomach issues since I’ve been here,” he said. “I’ve been throwing up every day during conditioning. It’s that, and I’ve been having back pain recently and I decided to hang it up.”

Webb could not be reached for comment.

Haselhorst said he has experienced rapid weight swings in recent weeks.

“I’m concerned, but I’m not worrying myself to death over it,” Haselhorst said. “I’ve had it checked out and had some blood tests done, so maybe I can find a solution.”

Haselhorst said he plans to attend classes at KU during the fall semester to complete the 12 credits he needs to graduate. He said he will attend all home football games “to support the team.”

“I’ve had a lot of fun in the program and they’ve given me some great memories,” Haselhorst said. “It’s a great bunch of guys and great coaches, and there is no doubt in my mind they’ll have success again this year if they do the right things, if they practice hard, work hard and do everything 100 percent all the time, like we did last year.”

Haselhorst added: “I would like to thank all the fans for their support and thank the coaches and the players for letting me have this opportunity.”

In the third quarter of the 24-21 victory against Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl, Haselhorst was involved in a play – Joe Mortensen’s blocked field goal – he listed as his career highlight.

“Before the play I turned to Joe and said, ‘The guard is weak and we should run him over.’ Joe ran him over, and I picked up the ball and tried to score a touchdown, but then I got hit by five people,” Haselhorst said.
