Motorists will encounter road and parking closings in downtown Lawrence that are slightly different than originally planned..

Crews will close Massachusetts Street from 10th to North Park Street on Monday. Crews originally were not scheduled to get to that section of the road until later in the month. But after milling the pavement off the section of the street, the city decided to accelerate the paving process for that section of Mass. Street. The section was more deteriorated than expected. Leaving it unpaved increases the chance that rainwater would seep into the road base and cause more problems.

The change means contractors have pushed back the closing of Massachusetts from Eight Street to 10th Street. It now is scheduled to occur from June 23 to June 27, weather permitting.

Pavement work on Massachusetts from Sixth to Eighth streets is going well, said Chuck Soules, director of public works for the city. That section of road is expected to open to traffic no later than Friday.
