City sets new schedule for Massachusetts Street repaving

Motorists will encounter road and parking closings in downtown Lawrence that are slightly different than originally planned..

Crews will close Massachusetts Street from 10th to North Park Street on Monday. Crews originally were not scheduled to get to that section of the road until later in the month. But after milling the pavement off the section of the street, the city decided to accelerate the paving process for that section of Mass. Street. The section was more deteriorated than expected. Leaving it unpaved increases the chance that rainwater would seep into the road base and cause more problems.

The change means contractors have pushed back the closing of Massachusetts from Eight Street to 10th Street. It now is scheduled to occur from June 23 to June 27, weather permitting.

Pavement work on Massachusetts from Sixth to Eighth streets is going well, said Chuck Soules, director of public works for the city. That section of road is expected to open to traffic no later than Friday.

Yeah ninth street is a bitch. When I was new to town I decided to take ninth back to Kasold from downtown, and I was very confused as to how many lanes there were, turning lanes, etc. I've been here for a year now, and that road still messes me up sometimes.

Is it every two years Mass St gets repaved? 19th and 23rd Streets might get some attention, but the rest of the roads are completely ignored.Try driving down 9th Street from Iowa to Mass. There are no traffic lines on the road.

yes - 9th street needs some attention, and who knows why it's not getting it - IMHO, it really just needs a new line-paint job and we'd all be good to go.Driving that strech at night or in the rain is insane - you really can't see the lines at all.Or maybe we just need a roundabout at 9th and Miss. - that should take care of any confusion.

They all suck but as we know certain areas of the city get preferential treatment. Lawrence looks shabby anymore and drives worse then county rock roads. Thank you past, future, and present commissioners and city managers.
