The city of Lawrence and the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce protested figures that indicated Douglas County and Lawrence had not gained residents in the past year. A mail census had been tried and seemed to be woefully inadequate. There were calls for door-to-door canvasses to get the figures right because so many tax issues hinged on census totals.
