Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 10, 1908: “The Kaw River finally has ceased to rise here and has been slowly dropping after drops of more than a foot were registered in Topeka yesterday. The high mark here was 23.5 feet, the second highest flood ever known on the Kaw. In 1903 the record crest here was 28 feet. It appears the flooding in North Lawrence was worse than expected and a good deal of damage is coming to light. The heaviest loss here was at the brick plant where the damage is due to run beyond $10,000. At one point, the entire operation was 12 feet under water. : One of the heroes of the flooding here was city councilman W.T. Hutchings who organized sand bagging crews for more than 48 hours with virtually no rest. It is estimated the bagging work will save the county more than a quarter of a million dollars. : Hutchings, though, was only one of many heroes during the ordeal. The local turnout for help was heartwarming and prevented a good deal of damage and loss.”
